Residency Program

Welcome to the Family and Community Medicine Residency Program at TTUHSC El Paso!

Whether you’re drawn by our strong academic foundation, our inspiring patient population, or our mission to serve the border and beyond, you’ll find that our residency offers a truly unique and fulfilling training experience. What makes us stand out? I’m glad you asked:

The City and Community: El Paso is an incredible place to live and train. As a border city with deep cultural roots, it offers the amenities of a large metro area but maintains a strong sense of community and connection. Residents enjoy beautiful desert landscapes, outdoor adventures within a short drive, and over 300 days of sunshine each year. It’s easy to feel at home here.

Border Health and Clinical Diversity: Training on the U.S.–Mexico border gives our residents unmatched exposure to a medically underserved and culturally diverse population. You’ll care for patients with complex, often advanced conditions from both sides of the border—developing skills in cultural humility, resourceful clinical reasoning, and full-spectrum care that will serve you well in any future setting.

Curriculum and Continuity: Our curriculum balances rigorous inpatient training with continuity in outpatient care through our state-of-the-art Family Medicine Center, a true Patient-Centered Medical Home. Longitudinal training in geriatrics, dermatology, procedures, and behavioral health ensures you build a comprehensive skill set while developing lasting relationships with patients. With six months of electives residents can take the lead in personalizing their training to meet their future practice goals.

Specialized Training Tracks: We offer three unique curricular tracks:

  • Integrative Medicine – in partnership with the University of Arizona
  • Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) – for our osteopathic residents
  • Sports Medicine – in collaboration with our fellowship program

These tracks provide additional depth in areas that align with your passions.

Research and Scholarship: Our department has a strong research infrastructure, with dedicated faculty and staff supporting scholarly activity in areas like cancer screening, obesity, and border health disparities. Residents participate in journal clubs, receive mentorship, and have the option to build time for projects that contribute to meaningful advances in primary care through their electives.

Faculty and Culture: Our faculty are not only skilled clinicians and educators but also committed mentors who create a supportive, inclusive environment. We take pride in our resident-first culture that emphasizes well-being, teamwork, and professional growth.

I invite you to explore our program and get to know our amazing residents and faculty. We are proud to train the next generation of family physicians to meet the needs of any community—with heart, skill, and purpose.
Warmly,

Katie Hartl, MD
